My Life in a Few Short Paragraphs
SomeI graduated from high school a year early, in 1977. I ran cross country and track all 3 years. I set the freshman record on our school's cross country course, which stood until the distance was changed from 2 miles to 5 kilometers. I was also in concert/marching band (tuba) and stage band (bass trombone) all 3 years, mixed chorus and played the Wizard in Once Upon a Mattress during my freshman year. I was in Boy Scouts, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout in 1978.
I attended a local community college, where I spent most of my time as a music major. Although I was not on a school athletic team, I continued to run in open races until 1981. I attended Mortuary College from 1980 to 1981 and worked in the funeral profession for the next 17 years.
In 1984 I married. We had 2 daughters, both of whom were married (one currently divorced), each have a daughter. We divorced in 1989, so I moved out of state, to where my parents and sister had moved. Shortly thereafter, I met my current wife. We married in 1991. No children. I continued to take college classes until 1994 when I earned my Bachelor's Degrees in Economics and Business Management. (*Yes, it took me 17 years to get my degree. No, it's never too late!)
In 1994, I entered graduate school to pursue a doctorate in psychology. In February 1998, in the midst of my internship, I donated a kidney to my sister. (She lived an additional 12 years.) I graduated in August 1998 and worked as a prison psychologist for 20 months before getting a job with a medical clinic. They disbanded mental health services after I had been there 20 months. I have been in solo private practice since March 2002. I travel the state doing evaluations for a few agencies.
In October 2001 I ran my first marathon. Since then I have completed 99 more; completing 100 total and 2 per state, so obviously we travel quite a bit. I am a member of the 50 States Marathon Club, Marathon Maniacs, and the 100 Marathon Club. I am co-founder of the Twin Lakes Half Olympic Distance Triathlon Championship. My wife and I were co-race directors of the What Was I Thinking? Marathon and 12-Hour Run. I am currently Race Director of Runs With Scissors Races (Half-Marathon, Marathon, & 50K). In January 2016, I directed the Cause and Effect Marathon.
In June 2013, while training for my 100th marathon, I was diagnosed with melanoma (Stage IIB) and had removal surgery at the end of the month. ***PLEASE WEAR SUNSCREEN!***
I had foot surgery in mid-November 2014 and developed a DVT (blood clot) that went to my lungs. Now I am on blood thinners. I had my right hip replaced in October 2015 and my left replaced in July 2020. As my mom used to say, "Getting old definitely isn't for sissies!"
I currently take private lessons in classical music composition and have taken all of the Music Theory and Composition courses at a local university. I have composed over 40 pieces ranging from piano solos to orchestral suites. My pieces have been performed and recorded both in the US and abroad. Some of my pieces can be heard on my composition website, which can be accessed via the "My Music" tab.
